Secondary English for Adult Learners (SEAL)

Secondary I

Language in Everyday Life — ENG-1061-3
First part of level 1 course. Students will learn to understand and give instructions such as phone messages, recipes and health and safety procedures

Language and Self-Expression — ENG-1062-3
Second part of level 1 course. Students will learn to use language to communicate ideas, feelings and opinions about such topics as likes, dislikes, anger, or fear, and to understand and appreciate the ideas, feelings and opinions of others through songs, stories or poems.

Secondary II

Language for Creativity — ENG-2061-3
First part of level 2 course. Students will learn to explore narratives such as a short story, a novel, a television drama, a situation comedy or a play, and to understand structures such as plot and characters, in order to develop narrative writing skills.
Language, Media and Communication ENG-2062-3
Second part of level 2 course. Students will learn to share feelings, ideas and opinions about such topics as the way information is gathered, how information is organized, and how information is presented. The activities are related to news reports from newspapers, the radio and television.

Secondary III

Language to Inform (ENG-3061-3) ENG-3070-3
First part of level 3 course. Students will learn to focus on information related to environmental issues, in order to expose them to different viewpoints and develop their ability to express opinions, supported by facts and essay techniques.
Language for Comment and Persuasion (ENG-3062-3) — ENG-3071-3
Second part of level 3 course. Students will learn to recognize, understand and analyze persuasive techniques used in newpapers, radio, television and aphorisms, and to use persuasive techniques to write a letter of opinion or complaint.

Secondary IV

Language for Enjoyment — ENG-4061-3
First part of level 4 course. Students will learn to develop their ability to share information, ideas, and opinions by responding to short articles, as well as a novel and a movie of their choice.
Language in Work and Society — ENG-4062-3

Secondary V

Language in Drama and Literature — ENG-5061-3
First part of level 5 course. Students will learn to explore a play and a novel to understand how they are structured by the writers. The students will also develop skills to write a short critical review of a literary work.
Language and Learning — ENG-5062-3
Second part of level 5 course. Students will learn to compose oral and written discourses intended to inform. They will be able to produce a research paper.
